What Ministry / Group do you Volunteer With?
Sandy: I am on the Women’s Ministry Leadership Team, Women’s Bible study, retreat committee & other fun Women’s events, AWANA, and VBS. I also K-1st Sunday School every Sunday.
Natalie: AWANA, Sunday School toddler room, and VBS.
When did you start coming to Canyon Springs?
Sandy: About 15 years ago (2000). Right after SCS tarted meeting at Dingeman Elementary.
Natalie: Since I was born.
What made you decide to Volunteer?
Sandy: After attending CSC for a few years, I remember jack challenging the church to volunteer in some capacity. Whether it was in the church, in our community, or elsewhere, it didn’t matter. He wanted us to think about where we felt called to serve and how we could “be the hands and feet of Jesus.” Since I love kids, the easy answer for me was to teach Sunday School. I’ve been teaching the second service K-1st grade for over 12 years now.
Natalie: I enjoy being with kids and I thought that since my mom teaches 2nd Service, I should try it out.
What is your favorite part about Volunteering?
Sandy: I love seeing “my kids” every Sunday morning. The beautiful smiles on their faces are priceless and it warms my heart. I’m reminded of Mathew 19:14, “Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'” That’s why I volunteer. I do it ALL for God’s glory!
Natalie: I get to serve God and have fun while doing it.
What feeling do you have when you are volunteering?
Sandy: I’m filled with so much joy when I serve God.
About You
Where were you born/raised?
Sandy: I’m a native San Diegan and was born in the “original” Scripps Hospital in downtown La Jolla. Most people don’t even know there was an “original” Scripps. That shows you how old I am.
Natalie: Here in san Diego in 2002.
Favorite childhood memory?
Natalie: Going on trips with mom and dad.
What is your job/profession outside of Canyon Springs?
Sandy: I’m a credentialed K-8th grade teacher. However, after Natalie was born, my husband and I decided that being a stat-at-home mom would be best for our family. When Natalie started Kindergarten I wanted to get back to the classroom, so now I’m a part-time substitute teacher. A WIN-WIN situation for everyone!
Married/Family/Children?
Sandy: I’ve been married for 22+ years to my wonderful husband, Chris. Natalie (13) is our only child.
Stuff & Random Tidbits
What was your favorite cartoon as a kid?
Sandy: Hmmm… I’m afraid to answer this one because it will give away my age. I loved The Yogi Bear Show, Underdog, and The Roadrunner Show. Does anyone remember those?
Natalie: Spongebob Squarepants.
What is your favorite food / restaurant in San Diego?
Sandy: Mexican, or Mexican. Yum!
Natalie: I like the China Coast Salad at Islands.
What is an interesting fact about yourself?
Sandy: When I was in my early 20’s, I lived in London and was a Nanny for a wealthy British family. I travelled throughout Europe with the family and met a lot of interesting people. My brush with fame came when I met Superman (Christopher Reeve) at a four-year-old’s birthday party. He was dropping off his son and I was dropping off my charge, Max. Christopher winked at me and said. “Hi.” I was rendered speechless (that doesn’t happen very often.) I dreamt about him for many years after that encounter. To this day, I’m intrigued by men in capes. :)
Natalie: I am part Philipino.
What is your favorite sports team?
Natalie: Denver Broncos! (My dad is from Denver.)
Where do you love to shop?
Natalie: Hollister & Tilly’s
How many donut holes do you eat each week in the courtyard?
Natalie: 1 or 2.
What is one word or phrase that describes you?
Natalie: Silly.
Anything else unique or interesting you can tell us about yourself?
Natalie: My instagram username ends in 316 because John 3:16 is my favorite Bible verse.
